About the Item

Shepard Fairey Peter Tosh: Legalize It Screen print on thick cream Speckletone paper Year: 2024 Size: 24 x 18 inches (60.96 x 45.72 cm) Edition: 500 Signed by Shepard Fairey, dated and numbered by hand Original Illustration based on a photograph by Kate Simon COA provided *Edition number may vary from the image shown. Created in recognition of what would have been Peter Tosh’s 80th birthday, this work honors one of the most uncompromising and politically conscious figures in modern music. Tosh is widely known as a founding member of The Wailers alongside Bob Marley and Bunny Livingston, helping to pioneer the global sound of reggae while first emerging through ska. Tosh played a formative role in Marley’s musical development and co-wrote enduring Wailers classics including “Get Up Stand Up” and “400 Years.” After departing The Wailers in 1974, Tosh launched a formidable solo career. His 1976 debut album Legalize It became both a commercial success and a cultural milestone, aligning music with activism and contributing to the global conversation around cannabis legalization. Subsequent albums such as Equal Rights and Bush Doctor expanded his influence further, including collaborations with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards that introduced Tosh to an even broader audience without diluting his radical clarity. This portrait was created in collaboration with photographer Kate Simon and is based on an image taken in 1976, at a pivotal moment surrounding the release of Legalize It. Simon’s long-standing relationship with Tosh offers rare intimacy, capturing both his commanding public presence and the warmth, humor, and humanity experienced by those who knew him personally. Simon recalls Tosh as fearless in his resistance to injustice, yet charismatic, thoughtful, and deeply expressive—qualities that made him an extraordinary subject both onstage and off. Fairey’s interpretation distills Tosh’s strength, conviction, and cultural impact, honoring not only a revolutionary musician but a figure whose voice and message continue to resonate across generations.
