About the Item

Original Sculpture of Black Africa exhibition poster. The Paul Tishman Collection. A 1968 vintage exhibition poster. Semi-glossy poster finish. No paper loss and no damage. There are a few tiny dings in this poster, but this is also the only documented copy we have been able to find. Capture a piece of art history with this original 1968 exhibition poster for the landmark show, "Sculpture of Black Africa: The Paul Tishman Collection." Held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the exhibition was a pivotal moment in bringing the power and complexity of African traditional arts to a major American museum audience. This vintage poster features a striking, high-contrast photograph of a sculpture from the collection, exemplifying the "visionary" aesthetic that Paul Tishman was known for. It serves as both a beautiful mid-century graphic piece and a significant historical document of African art scholarship. In 1959, collectors Paul and Ruth Tishman bought their first two artworks from the Benin Kingdom of Nigeria, including an exquisite ivory female figure. Over the next 20-plus years, they built one of the great private collections of African art. The collection was sold to the Walt Disney Company in 1984. It was originally intended to be a permanent collection at Epcot theme park at Walt Disney World, but that plan was never realized. In 2005, Walt Disney World donated all 525 objects to the National Museum of African Art. Note: The Paul Tishman (1900 – 1996) exhibition was created in 1968, prior to the sale to Walt Disney World. There is a hard-to-find early book, Sculpture of Black Africa: The Paul Tishman Collection by Roy Sieber and Arnold Rubin, that helps document this early collection. Each poster includes a Certificate of Authenticity. We use sturdy, appropriate packaging to ensure it arrives safely. We strive to provide the most accurate and detailed online descriptions of the artwork's condition.
