About the Item

Artist: Dali, Salvador Title: Atomo Series: Colibri Date: 1973 Medium: Original Lithograph on Arches Unframed Dimensions: 30" x 22" Framed Dimensions: 37.5" x 29.75" Signature: Pencil signed Edition: 186/300 Literature: Albert Field, 129 Publisher: Galerie Colibri, San Juan Salvador Dalí (1904–1989) was an eccentric and innovative Spanish painter whose name is synonymous with the Surrealist art movement. He was a prolific artist, creating more than 1,500 paintings during his lifetime and has many works in other media, including prints, drawings, sculpture, book illustration, and theater set designs. His best known surrealist works defied logic and embraced the subconscious. Born in Figueres, Catalonia, Spain, Dalí showed early artistic talent and a flair for the theatrical — traits that would come to define both his work and his persona. He rose to prominence in the 1920s and '30s as a central figure in the Surrealist movement, alongside artists like André Breton and René Magritte. His breakthrough piece, The Persistence of Memory (1931), featuring melting clocks in a dreamlike landscape, became a lasting symbol of Surrealism and a visual exploration of time and perception. With a mastery of classical technique and a mind for the fantastical, Dalí blended hyper-realistic detail with impossible, often irrational imagery drawn from dreams, Freudian theory, and personal mythology. His work spanned multiple mediums, including painting, sculpture, film, photography, and even fashion — often pushing boundaries and sparking debate. He collaborated with figures like Alfred Hitchcock (Spellbound) and Walt Disney (Destino), expanding the reach of Surrealism beyond the traditional gallery space. Salvador Dalí was a wealthy artist during his lifetime. Today, Salvador Dalí’s legacy endures not only through his vast and varied body of work but also through his lasting impact on contemporary art, pop culture, and the very idea of artistic identity. He utilized the power of media attention to gain fame and recognition, paving the way for later media savvy artists like Pop artist Andy Warhol. Two museums dedicated to his life and work opened while he was still living. Dalí’s works continue to be relevant and sought after, fetching increasingly high prices in art auction houses throughout the world today.
