About the Item

"Nightscape" is a serigraph on paper by Seikichi Takara, signed 'S Takara' lower right and numbered HC 49/75 lower left. The image size is 35 x 32 inches and the framed dimensions are 48 x 45 inches. From the total edition of 550 (there were also 295 Arabics, 100 Romans, 75 APs, 75 HCs, and 5 PPs.) Framed in a contemporary black frame. Martin Lawrence Galleries through Martin Lawrence Limited Editions is the original publisher of this print. This print is therefore as new, with no prior ownership. In Nightscape, Seikichi Takara distills the essence of nocturnal experience into a composition that is both mysterious and quietly luminous. The dominant expanse of black at the center of the serigraph creates an atmosphere of depth and stillness, suggesting a landscape reduced to its elemental contrasts. Yet this darkness is far from empty; it is a field alive with subtle textures, drifting marks, and glimmers of color that pulse like distant signals in the night. Across the upper edge of the composition, Takara lays a band of violet and blue, a horizon that seems to hover between dusk and dawn. This strip of color, fractured by strokes of white, pink, turquoise, and gold, recalls the last remnants of light fading into shadow or the first hints of morning dispersing the night. The marks float and scatter with a sense of atmospheric drift, as if shaped by unseen winds or shifting cloud formations. They gesture toward place without describing it, allowing viewers to sense a horizon rather than locate it. From this tenuous skyline, a vertical white form descends into the black field below. It functions as both anchor and interruption—a column of light, a structural echo, or perhaps the suggestion of a solitary figure abstracted to pure presence. Takara leaves its identity ambiguous, encouraging viewers to interpret it as an element of orientation within an otherwise unbounded space. Around it, delicate arcs, splashes, and flecks of color—pink, red, turquoise—flicker like glowing embers, passing headlights, or distant city lights softened by atmospheric haze. The lower portion of the serigraph introduces pale planes of cream and muted rose, partially obscured by drips of pigment that descend into the darkness. These areas read as illuminated surfaces at the edge of visibility—perhaps ground catching the glow of artificial light or reflections on water that dissolve into shadow. Their textured edges, rubbed and mottled, offer a tactile contrast to the velvety black above, reinforcing Takara’s interest in the interplay between solidity and dissolution. As in much of his work, Nightscape relies on abstraction not to obscure the world but to reveal its atmospheric and emotional resonance. Rather than depicting a specific place, Takara evokes the sensory experience of night: its quiet expansiveness, its spectral glimmers, its interplay of concealment and revelation. The composition oscillates between serenity and tension, as if something just beyond sight is shaping the space—a movement, a memory, or a presence that lingers in the dark. Ultimately, Nightscape transforms the night into a poetic field of color and gesture. Through restrained marks and radiant accents, Takara captures the shifting thresholds of perception that define nocturnal vision. His serigraph becomes not a picture of night, but an immersion in its depths—an invitation to see darkness not as absence, but as a realm alive with possibility. Seikichi Takara (b.1929) is a Hawaiian American painter and printmaker celebrated for his atmospheric blend of abstraction, gesture, and nature-inspired imagery. Born on Oʻahu to parents of Okinawan ancestry, he grew up within the culturally rich environment of mid-century Hawaiʻi, where his artistic talent emerged early. A supportive teacher helped arrange his first formal classes at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, complementing his largely self-directed development. Takara’s parallel work as a graphic artist and screen printer shaped his refined technical approach, particularly his mastery of layered color and luminous tonal transitions. By the 1960s he was exhibiting in Hawaiʻi, gaining recognition for works that merged abstract expressionist sensibilities with the moods and atmospheres of the islands. An early milestone came in 1968 when he received a public prize at the Hanalei Art Festival for his painting Erosion. His mature style is defined by translucent fields of blues, greens, and violets, animated by dynamic linear gestures that evoke natural forces—waves, mist, wind, or celestial movement—without depicting them literally. Whether in paintings or serigraph editions, Takara’s work offers a meditative vision of nature transformed through abstraction, making him a distinctive voice in Hawaiʻi’s post-war art landscape.

"Night Views" Silkscreen Print by The Skyscape Artist, 25/100. By Tetsuro Sawada ( Japanese, 1933-1998) This raven black geometric abstraction focuses on hard-edged horizontal lines, color, and light, giving the impression of dusk through the "bokashi," or shading, technique, which is most difficult in the silkscreen medium, a good example of Sawada's theme of the infinite beyond, the silent emptiness of the universe. Signature in the bottom right corner reads, "T. Sawada '87," titled in the bottom center, "Night Views," and numbered, "25/100," in the bottom left corner. Presented in a new white mat. Paper size: 34"H x 22"W, Mat size: 39"H x 27"W Born in Hokkaido, Tetsuro Sawada (1933-1998, Japanese) graduated from Musashimo Art University where he majored in Western painting.
