About the Item

This exquisite lithograph and pochoir after Andre Derain (1880–1954), titled Nature morte (Still Life), from the folio Andre Derain 1880 - 1954, 1961, originates from the edition published by Editions dart du lion, Paris, and rendered and printed by Gabriel Coet, Fernande Beaufume, and Maurice Beaufume, Paris, completed on August 2, 1961. The composition reflects Derains mature synthesis of classical structure and modern form, translating balanced geometry, tactile surface, and restrained chromatic harmony into refined printmaking of exceptional clarity and authority. Executed as a lithograph and pochoir on velin de Arches paper, this work measures 20 x 23.75 inches. Signed in the plate and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the high technical standards of postwar French art printing and the collaborative craftsmanship of the S. E. P. L. presses and the Beaufume atelier. Examples numbered from I to C were drawn especially for the friends of Mr. Pierre Levy. About the Publication: Andre Derain 1880 - 1954, published in 1961 by Editions dart du lion, Paris, is a significant postwar art album devoted to the work of one of the founding figures of Fauvism and a central presence in twentieth century French painting. Conceived as a comprehensive visual survey rather than a single work presentation, the publication brought together a carefully selected group of Derains paintings translated into lithograph and pochoir through sophisticated printmaking methods that preserved chromatic nuance and structural integrity. Produced during a period when Paris remained a vital center for fine art printing, the album reflects the continued commitment to artisanal processes at a time when mechanical image transfer was becoming increasingly dominant. The collaboration between the S. E. P. L. presses for typography and the workshops of Gabriel Coet, Fernande Beaufume, and Maurice Beaufume for the prints ensured a high level of surface richness and tonal control. Issued in a strictly limited edition with special impressions reserved for the friends of Pierre Levy, the publication stands as both a scholarly document and a collectors object, representative of mid twentieth century French art publishing devoted to preserving modern masters through refined printmaking. About the Artist: Andre Derain (1880–1954) was a French painter, printmaker, sculptor, and one of the founding figures of Fauvism whose radical use of color and form helped redefine modern art in the early twentieth century. Born in Chatou near Paris, Derain emerged alongside Henri Matisse and Maurice de Vlaminck as a pioneer of expressive color, producing early works of startling intensity that broke decisively from Impressionism. Influenced by Paul Cezannes structural discipline, Paul Gauguins chromatic invention, and the optical investigations of Georges Seurat, Derain developed a practice that balanced emotional force with compositional order. Over time, his work evolved toward a more classical sensibility, marked by solidity, restraint, and an engagement with historical tradition. Throughout his career, he moved within the central circles of modernism, sharing intellectual and artistic dialogue with figures such as Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. His paintings remain prized for their historical importance, formal clarity, and enduring visual power. The highest auction record for Andre Derain was achieved by Arbres a Collioure (1905), which sold for 16281250 GBP at Sothebys London on June 22, 2010.
