About the Item
This exquisite lithograph and pochoir after Georges Valmier (1885–1937), titled Femme assise (Seated Woman), from the album L'Art Cubiste, Theories et Realisations, Etude Critique (Cubist Art, Theories and Achievements, Critical Study), originates from the 1929 edition published by Editions Charles Moreau, Paris, and printed by Atelier Daniel Jacomet, Paris, May 1929. Femme assise (Seated Woman) exemplifies Valmier’s mastery of geometric structure and chromatic harmony, blending the precision of Cubism with the lyricism of abstraction. The composition’s interlocking planes and rhythmic balance reveal his fascination with the mathematical foundations of form and the musical resonance of color. Through his refined use of shape and tone, Valmier transforms the human figure into a poetic architecture of light and order—an embodiment of the intellectual and emotional synthesis that defined his art.
Executed as a lithograph and pochoir on velin paper, this work measures 10.83 x 8.27 inches. Signed in the plate and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the exceptional craftsmanship of Atelier Daniel Jacomet, Paris, under the direction of Editions Charles Moreau, Paris.

About the Publication:
L'Art Cubiste, Theories et Realisations, Etude Critique (Cubist Art, Theories and Achievements, Critical Study), published in 1929 by Editions Charles Moreau, remains one of the most comprehensive visual and theoretical documents of Cubism’s evolution. Bringing together writings and plates by the foremost Cubist artists—Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Juan Gris, Fernand Leger, Albert Gleizes, Andre Lhote, Louis Marcoussis, Auguste Herbin, and Georges Valmier—the publication celebrated the intellectual rigor and poetic abstraction of the movement. Printed by Daniel Jacomet in lithograph and finished by hand in pochoir, the plates captured the exact tonal and chromatic subtleties of each artist’s style. The result was a rare synthesis of fine printing, critical theory, and artistic innovation that marked the apex of early modernist publishing. As both a scholarly study and a work of art, the volume endures as a testament to Cubism’s legacy as the foundation of 20th-century abstraction.
About the Artist:
Georges Valmier (1885–1937) was a revolutionary French painter, stage designer, and color theorist whose artistic journey from Impressionism through Cubism to pure abstraction placed him among the most innovative and intellectually profound figures of early modern art. Born in Angouleme and raised in Montmartre, Valmier absorbed the radical spirit of early 20th-century Paris while studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Luc-Olivier Merson. Initially influenced by the Impressionists and Fauvists, he later turned toward Cubism under the guidance of Paul Cezanne’s structural principles and the groundbreaking innovations of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. His work during and after World War I was deeply shaped by his friendship with Albert Gleizes, whose theories on mathematical harmony and spiritual order transformed Valmier’s approach to abstraction. By the 1920s, Valmier had become a central figure bridging Cubism and pure abstraction, creating paintings that fused rigorous geometry with lyrical color harmonies reminiscent of music, earning him comparisons to Wassily Kandinsky and Piet Mondrian. His involvement with the avant-garde collectives Section d’Or and Abstraction-Creation placed him alongside modernist masters such as Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, all of whom shared his pursuit of a universal visual language. Valmier’s works are characterized by rhythmic balance, architectural precision, and radiant color, often described as “visual symphonies” for their melodic interplay of form and tone. Beyond painting, he explored applied arts, stage design, and textiles, integrating abstract aesthetics into theater and everyday life in the spirit of the Bauhaus and Constructivist movements. His late paintings from 1932–1937 represent the culmination of his vision, where crystalline forms and harmonious hues reveal a meditation on cosmic order and emotional resonance. Though his life was cut short at 52, Valmier’s influence extended to postwar abstraction, inspiring artists like Victor Vasarely, Sonia and Robert Delaunay, Ellsworth Kelly, and Bridget Riley. His paintings, held in major institutions such as the Centre Pompidou and Musee d’Art Moderne de Paris, are celebrated for their fusion of structure, rhythm, and emotion. Standing among visionaries such as Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, Georges Valmier remains a cornerstone of 20th-century abstraction. The highest auction record for Georges Valmier was achieved by Composition abstraite (Abstract Composition), which sold for $2,640,000 USD at Christie’s, New York, on May 13, 2019, affirming his enduring importance and collectibility in the history of modern art.
