About the Item
Guntars Sietiņš is internationally celebrated for his masterful mezzotints—works that push the medium to its outer limits of light, reflection, and illusion. In Characters XVIII, two mirror-smooth spheres hover above a field of cascading numbers, their surfaces capturing both the surrounding environment and a dreamlike interior world. Within the reflections, a window seems to open toward a distant tree and landscape, creating a surreal interplay between reality and imagination.
Sietiņš’s prints often evoke comparisons to M.C. Escher for their optical complexity, yet his approach is unmistakably his own: precise, meditative, and rooted in an almost scientific attention to the behavior of light. The velvety blacks and delicate tonal transitions demonstrate his exceptional control of the mezzotint rocker and burnishing tools.
A striking example of Sietiņš’s signature style, this work is signed, numbered from the edition of 35, and beautifully framed.
Guntars Sietins' prints continue to win international printmaking competitions, and he was recently featured in the book Printmaking Beyond the Edge by Richard Noyce. Sietins was born on October 23, 1962 in Kuldiga, Latvia. Since 1986 Mr. Sietins has kept up a full schedule of exhibitions in Europe. Mr. Sietins is also professor of Graphic Art at the Latvian Academy of Art, where he is currently department head. His prints are in numerous museums in Europe.

Guntars Sietins
Sietiņš was born on October 23, 1962 in Kuldiga, Latvia. Since 1986 Sietiņš has kept up a full schedule of exhibitions in Europe, where his prints often win prizes. Sietins is also professor of Graphic Art at the Latvian Academy of Art, where he is currently department head. His prints are in numerous museums in Europe. Guntars Sietiņš is one of the finest graphic artists of his generation. Using the difficult medium of mezzotint, he combines hyper-realism and surrealism to create a very distinct aesthetic. Sietiņš transforms reality into a world of surreal objects that exist outside normal confines of time and gravity. Recent awards include:
