About the Item

Masami Iwata, 'Flowers and Ko-Imari', color woodblock print, c. 1960, edition 250. Signed, and with the artist’s seal, lower right. A superb, painterly impression, with fresh colors, on cream wove Japan paper; the full sheet in excellent condition. Archivally sleeved, unmatted. Image size 18 1/8 x 14 3/4 inches (460 x 375 mm); sheet size 19 13/16 x 16 3/16 inches (503 x 411 mm). A vase filled with deep violet bellflowers. The style of the porcelain container is "Ko-Imari" or "Old Imari," which features colorful designs first produced in the 17th century. The deep blue and purple blossoms contrast dramatically with the painterly gold background and the delicate rendering of the vase. Published by The Momose Print Company of Tokyo. ABOUT THE ARTIST Masami Iwata was born in Niigata prefecture. He studied Japanese-style painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and regularly contributed to the official, state-sponsored exhibitions of Teiten, Nitten, and Inten. Iwata, Eikyu Matsuoka, and other leading Kyoto artists established "Shinko Yamato-e Kai" in 1921 (dissolved in 1931) to revitalize traditional Japanese painting, Yamato-e. The members of "Shinko Yamato-e Kai" combined the vivid colors and refined drawing techniques of traditional Yamato-e with the modernist design elements. Their influence is recognized as an essential influence in modern Japanese art.
