About the Item

Cape Cod from the New England suite is a serigraph on paper measuring 16 x 18 inches, signed 'McKnight' lower right and annotated lower left. Framed in a contemporary, black frame. Numbered 133/200 from the edition of 510 (there were also 50 AP, 200 Roman, 50 HC, 6 PP and 4 TP). Framed in a contemporary black moulding. Cape Cod is summer in all its idyllic, perfect stillness, where the only movement is the boats on the water, and the only sound is the music made by the inhabitants of the marshy grass along the shore. As collectors of the work of Thomas McKnight well know, he usually does not paint an actual location, exactly as it appears in real life; more often, it is his interpretation of this place, combined with his imaginative ideal of what the place could look like in the circumstances he invents. In the New England Suite, he says that “Although I named the images in this suite after New England towns and places, they are all fantasies – attempts to get at the archetypal heart of the meaning of New England. I included landscapes in all four seasons, which in New England stand out stronger, perhaps, than anywhere else in America. My most intense and delightful memories of New England are all seasonal events.” Martin Lawrence Galleries is an affiliate of Chalk Vermilion Fine Arts, the original publisher of this print. This print is as new, with no prior ownership.
