About the Item

This vibrant 1968 original poster by Villazón celebrates the spirit, color, and cultural richness of the XIX Olympiad, held in Mexico City, the first Olympic Games to take place in Latin America. A stunning example of mid-century graphic design and Mexican modernism, the artwork is an explosion of festive energy. At its center are abstracted representations of piñatas, rendered in bold, overlapping colors and geometric forms, a clear tribute to Mexican tradition and national identity. Above the joyful chaos of colors, the unmistakable Olympic rings sit prominently in deep blue, anchoring the international symbolism of the event. The sharp typography contrasts beautifully against the kinetic background, with “XIX OLIMPIADA” and “MEXICO” spread across the canvas in striking black and magenta letters. The composition brings together cultural pride and global unity in a way that’s both celebratory and sophisticated. Villazón’s design reflects the creative boom in Mexico during the late 1960s, when design, politics, and art intersected in a unique moment of national expression. The use of piñatas not only adds visual dynamism but also links the modern Games to popular Mexican folk traditions, making this poster a powerful fusion of modernist abstraction and local symbolism. Now considered a classic of Olympic poster design, this piece is a prized collector’s item for enthusiasts of sports memorabilia, Mexican graphic design, and mid-century modern posters. It captures not just an international event, but the vibrant energy of a country eager to share its identity with the world. Olympic Games - Sport Impresos Automaticos - Mexico

Bruckmann, Germany, with 2 additional screenprints of the Emblem by Victor Vasarely, 1972, signed from the edition of 200, on wove paper, each sheet, various measurements. (30 works) The 1972 Olympic Committee commissioned 28 international artists to each produce an original print for the Munich Games that year. The artists were given unprecedented freedom to explore their personal perspectives of the Olympic spirit using their own unique styles and methods. Departing from the traditional subject matter and style of past Olympic prints, the artists produced works which ranged from abstraction to realism, and from collage to op-art. The Committee specifically commissioned world-renowned artists to produce this series in order to destigmatise the idea that fine art should be reserved for private enjoyment. Instead, these posters demonstrated that art can exist comfortably in the public sphere, serving both as art and advertisement and echoing the founder of the modern Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin...
