Alicia Gimeno (Barcelona, 1989) extends her artistic language into sculpture as a natural evolution of her long-standing exploration of calligraphy, gesture, and the relationship between body, space, and nature. Her time in Mexico, where she was first introduced to calligraphic practices, marked a turning point in her understanding of form as an expressive and spiritual act. What began as an investigation into writing gradually transformed into a broader inquiry into how movement, rhythm, and presence can exist independently of language.
In her sculptural works, Gimeno translates the calligraphic stroke into three-dimensional form. The line is no longer drawn on paper but unfolds in space, becoming a physical gesture that can be walked around, perceived from multiple angles, and experienced bodily. These sculptures retain the essence of writing—fluid, restrained, intentional—while shedding any dependency on text or narrative. They function as silent signs, open to interpretation, resonating beyond linguistic meaning.
Material and color remain deliberately reduced. Black, matte surfaces and clean contours emphasize structure, shadow, and negative space, allowing form to breathe. This restraint reflects Gimeno’s belief that color is not essential to communicate energy or emotion; instead, it is the balance between fullness and emptiness that carries meaning. Her sculptures often evoke organic references—roots, stems, or fragmented botanical forms—suggesting growth, grounding, and connection to the natural world.
Movement is central to these works. Each piece embodies the flow of Qì (氣), the vital life force present in Eastern philosophy, captured through controlled yet dynamic curves. Concepts such as Ma (間), the active presence of empty space, and Wabi Sabi, the acceptance of imperfection and transience, are embedded not as theoretical references but as lived principles guiding her process.
Through sculpture, Alicia Gimeno invites the viewer into a contemplative encounter—one that asks for slowness, attention, and physical awareness. Her works exist as quiet yet powerful presences, encouraging a reconnection with the most essential rhythms of nature and with the subtle energy that links movement, matter, and spirit.
