About the Item
This contemporary tall ceramic vessel is handmade.
Bill Greaves creates handsome contemporary ceramics inspired by the colours, forms and textures found in nature. The Canadian ceramicist hand coils his eclectic vessels to build the form. The remarkable visible texture of this elegant piece is created by carving the surface. The palette is neutral—the raised surface pattern highlighted by moss green. The interior is an earthy dark clay colour. The sienna coloured rim of the vase is irregular—a characteristic that adds to its bespoke form. The former architect loves the tactile quality of clay and the almost endless possibilities that working with this ancient material possesses. One of a series.
“I called the series ‘haptic’, which literally means sense of touch, as I really want people to touch my work. I want people to feel the textures.” Bill Greaves
William Greaves received a Master of Architecture from Yale University and was a practising architect in NYC for several years before he became an artist full-time.
He studied ceramics at Alex Yeung Studio in Toronto from 2017-2019. His studio was set up in 2020 and is near Consecon, Ontario. His work is shown here in Ontario and in NYC.

"Queen Amazon, " Ceramic Vessel
Located in Westport, CT
This crystalline glazed porcelain vessel by Jon Puzzuoli features an earthy green and sand-toned palette and a dark, narrow neck. The crystalline glaze over the surface creates the aesthetic of green "crystals" which form along the the surface of the piece. The artist's stamp can be found at the base of the vessel.
Crystalline glazes are special ceramic glazes in which zinc-silicate crystals grow inside the glaze while it is still very hot. The crystals begin as microscopic seeds in the glaze, which form in random numbers and locations. When the kiln is cooled to the proper temperature, crystals start to grow.
In order for crystals to grow, the glaze must be very fluid. Much of the glaze runs off the vessel during the firing into a catch basin...
