About the Item

This handwoven contemporary textile sculpture, Azul, was done by Chilean fiber artist, Carolina Yrarrázaval (b. 1960). Yrarrázaval explains her inspiration and technique: "Throughout my entire artistic career I have devoted myself to investigating traditional textile techniques from diverse cultures, especially Pre-Columbian techniques, trying to adapt them to my creative needs. Abstraction has always been present as an aesthetic aim, informing my choice of materials, forms, textures and colors. The simple proportions are guided by an intuitive sense that avoids the use of mathematical formulas. There is neither message nor interpretation. This simplification and freedom from conceptual constraints combine to reveal a language that conjures up other impressions, such as emptiness and the need for austerity and sensuality, silence and aloneness." Recipient: Critics Prize: Best exhibition on visual arts; First prize: Salón Nacional Textil Bolsa de Comercio, B. Aires, Argentina.

Textile wall sculpture: PONCHO DE SANCHO
By Judy Rushin-Knopf
Located in New York, NY
This piece is from a body of work called 'Vital Signs’ which springs from the domain of hospitals and illness through combinations of hand-woven and tufted textiles and minimalist box-like objects that hang on walls or embed in the textiles themselves. The textiles refer to items of worn clothing, flattened identity, and superstition that come with illness and extended hospital stays. Their dominant color is blue, a hue known to calm the nervous system, but also the color of a failing body (cyanosis). The black and white objects...
