About the Item

In 2023, Charles Lutz unveiled a series of new stainless steel sculptures based on Ruba Rombic glassware at Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, as part of his installation titled Modern Made Leisure. The show explored the intersection of domestic goods and high art, presenting sculptures inspired by glassware once sold at the department store owned by the Kaufmann family, who commissioned the iconic house. The glassware, representing the everyday luxury of the time, now took on new life through Lutz’s reinterpretation, transformed into objects that reflected their surroundings. The installation drew attention to how the profits from the sale of such domestic goods contributed to the funding of Fallingwater's construction, creating a dialogue between commerce, art, and architecture. Lutz’s Ruba Rombic vase, a geometric masterpiece in stainless steel, reflected his long-standing fascination with transforming mundane objects into symbols of refinement and financial transference. In this piece, he employed the sharp, angular lines of the original Art Deco glassware, elevating it to a luxurious and polished surface that shimmered under the light. This transformation mirrored the artist’s ongoing exploration of Duchamp's concept of the ready-made, where everyday objects are recontextualized and elevated through the lens of fine art. Lutz took these once-ordinary items and turned them into something sublime, suggesting a commentary on the blurred boundaries between mass production and high culture. The installation also served as a reflection on the relationship between the Kaufmanns’ business success and their commission of Fallingwater, questioning the way domestic goods and consumer culture intersect with architectural grandeur. Through his sculptures, Lutz invited viewers to reconsider how the sale of something as simple as glassware played a pivotal role in creating a monument to modernism. By drawing upon the history of the Kaufmann family’s department store and its cultural impact, Lutz not only paid homage to the past but also made a statement about the role of art in transforming everyday objects into lasting legacies. Materials: Polished Stainless Steel The sculpture was conceived to have flowers installed, as shown. An internal vessel to hold water should be used. Dimensions: 9" x 8" x 7"

Concorde Cap, Electroplated Copper Contemporary Art Sculpture by Shelter Serra
By Shelter Serra
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Concorde Cap Shelter Serra 5.5”x7”x9” Electroplated Copper 2017 The Concorde Cap is one of an ongoing series of copper electroplated hats. Ranging from Superman to Nascar, the artist chooses hats from all walks of life before distilling through the electroplating process, transforming the once functional hat into an object of contemplation and beauty. Shelter Serra’s sculptures and drawings explore notions of mass consumption and cultural identity. He juxtaposes objects that are both mundane and immediately recognizable: a 40 ounce bottle of malt liquor cast in plaster, a Best Buy cap plated in copper, and a designer handbag cast in resin, to name a few. Casting and plating these objects in unlikely materials—resin, plaster, platinum silicone, and copper—Serra strips them of their intended functionality, thereby highlighting their underlying cultural symbolism and transforming branded products into objects of aesthetic contemplation. “Refining an aesthetic and making beautiful objects, whether that be a dress, bag, or sculpture," says Serra, "is a celebration of pure creativity and personal vision.” His Fake Gun...

By Shelter Serra

Campbell’s Pea Soup Can, 2017, 3.75”x2.5” inches diameter, cast aluminum, edition of 2. Pop Artist Andy Warhol made the Campbell’s soup can an icon of Post War America. This version, cast from an original can, in solid aluminum, is an ode to Mr. Warhol and a slight reference to Popeye, who ate spinach to increase his stamina. Shelter Serra’s paintings, sculptures, and drawings explore mass consumption and cultural identity. He juxtaposes subject matters that are both common and recognizable: a Campbell's Soup Can, a copper plated baseball hat, and a Hermes Birkin bag...
