Kosso Eloul (1920-1995) is one of our favorite sculptors and an important contributor to public art in Toronto. In addition to the numerous public sculptures in Toronto by Eloul, his works can be found in many other prominent open spaces around the world, from California to Israel. Most familiar with Eloul associate his work with his signature forms; large brushed aluminum (or steel) angled rectangles. However his earlier work was realized in stone. This steam-bent wooden sculpture is made of walnut with a granite base. The wood grain and the color are uniqueness of this sculpture. The wood has magnificent stripe patterns of paler and darker colors. One of them is to stay positive and keep hope. In some cultures, a heron symbolizes contemplation, vigilance, divine wisdom, and inner quietness. As a Chinese symbol, a heron represents strength, purity, patience and long life. In Africa, herons were thought to communicate with the Gods.
