About the Item

'Baquba' is a contemporary abstract glass by artist David Ruth. Created in 2008, it was a piece in a series about the David's views on the American invasion of Iraq. "In 2005, a few years after the American invasion of Iraq, I conceptualized a series of pieces based on blood and oil, black and red, to honor the horror and rapaciousness, the greed and stupidity of the enterprise. They all are superimposed with a goopy calligraphy, half Arabic and half oil, that I made by trailing out molten glass. Several of pieces use a particularly bright red from a factory in Portland. The blocks are polished then put back in the kiln to fuse on the glass calligraphy." About David Ruth David Ruth is an Oakland, California based glass sculptor that has been making large-scale cast glass sculptures and architectural features for over 30 years. Often featuring bright colors and contrasting polished surfaces with rough textures, the work has been featured in architecture, museums, and in galleries around the world. He holds degrees in History from University of California at Santa Cruz and glass from California College of the Arts. Over the years he has taught various workshops and classes in glass techniques and is considered an innovator in glass casting.
