About the Item
Contemporary, Mixed Media, Wall Sculpture, Yarn Over Wood, Framed, Sculpture
Douglas Dale uses contoured yarn to trace and mimic wood grain, allowing solid forms to seemingly dissolve into loose, flowing fiber. By building objects seemingly in mid-transition, Dale emphasizes both extremes of conflicting binaries and the information that is lost when applied to a rigid taxonomy.
“I draw inspiration from camp, drag, theater, and the club scene: spaces where reality is the product of illusion. I reside in subcultures prioritizing materiality, determining value through attention, labor, and subverting tradition. Proudly trans nonbinary, I extend my own queering unto inanimate objects to break presumed polarities: mixing masculine and feminine, hard and soft, wood and textile.” - Artist Statement

GREENSLEEVE
By Judy Rushin-Knopf
Located in New York, NY
This piece is from a new body of work called 'Vital Signs’ which will premiere at Ivy Brown Gallery in NYC and springs from the domain of hospitals and illness through combinations of hand-woven and tufted textiles and minimalist box-like objects that hang on walls or embed in the textiles themselves. The textiles refer to items of worn clothing, flattened identity, and superstition that come with illness and extended hospital stays. Their dominant color is blue, a hue known to calm the nervous system, but also the color of a failing body (cyanosis). The black and white objects...
