Artist's Commentary:
"Dyed stiffened silk, string From the Tweed Series Tweeds are an installation of related individual forms. The pieces are comprised of an original method I have created with stiffened silk. I produce multitudes of “silk straws” individually colored with dyes. With a beautiful spectrum of colored pieces, I string them into “tweed” like color combinations. I envision each individual colored straw as a brush stroke of paint and because of the array of colors, I can produce a color scheme that makes each piece unique. The works have an overall feeling of texture in the round and when installed as a group, relationships are created between the pieces. The installations are inspired by landscapes, particularly sky and expansive vistas. The installations are unique and the saturated colors enhance people to come closer to investigate."
About the Artist:
Hollie Heller is a multifaceted artist who divides her time between New York City and Costa Rica. Her masterful works are largely inspired by materials collected on her travels. Heller’s knowledge of design, textiles and weaving allow her to make the most of the materials she finds. Although steeped in said traditional methods of making, she is constantly experimenting and testing the limits of ordinary materials. Heller has been teaching surface design and collage for over twenty years, her students provide a wealth of inspiration for her. "'Tied', the title of the installation series, is a phonetic pun on the rising tides and the paper pages bound by threads.
As the water rises and falls, pages of our daily experience add and subtract to and from our memory. Our daily life permeates our memory just as the ink is absorbed into each page and create new shapes and patterns onto what once was a clean slate of a blank page."
