About the Item
JAY PHILLIPS – "BEL-AIR GATE"
⚜ Enamel on Aluminum Wall Sculpture ⚜ Hand Signed and Numbered Lower Right ⚜ Roy Boyd Gallery Provenance ⚜ Acrylic Shadow Box Frame
BOLD GEOMETRIC ENAMEL SCULPTURE
Created in 1981, Bel-Air Gate is a dynamic enamel-on-aluminum wall sculpture by Jay Phillips, an artist celebrated for merging the visual languages of painting and sculpture. In this shaped wall piece, Phillips overlays vibrant patterns — stripes, polka dots, and gestural marks — in saturated enamel hues of red, blue, yellow, green, and black. The aluminum support is cut into bold, architectural contours that extend beyond the rectangular format, creating a hybrid of painting and relief sculpture.
Presented in its original acrylic shadow box frame, this work demonstrates Phillips’ fascination with the interplay of surface, pattern, and structure. Bel-Air Gate was exhibited at Roy Boyd Gallery (Chicago/Los Angeles), where Phillips held important early shows that helped establish his reputation in the 1980s.

THE ARTIST:
Jay Phillips (1954–1987) was an American painter and sculptor recognized for his bold use of enamel on aluminum, creating vibrant wall pieces that merge painting and sculpture. Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Phillips rose to prominence in the early 1980s with exhibitions at Roy Boyd Gallery in Chicago and Los Angeles, followed by his inclusion in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) in 1985, where he received the museum’s Young Talent Award. He also exhibited at Emmanuel Gallery in Denver and other notable venues.
Phillips’ practice attracted critical attention, including a feature in Artforum (April 1983) by Howard Singerman, who described the “enamel skin” of his paintings — layered surfaces animated by stripes, grids, polka dots, and gestural marks on cut and folded aluminum supports. Critics noted his connections to Pattern and Decoration and to contemporaries such as Tom Holland and Frank Stella, while emphasizing the originality of his shaped aluminum works that brought new energy to postmodern abstraction.
Though his career was brief, Phillips established a distinctive aesthetic identity and left behind a body of work that remains significant in the trajectory of American abstraction, sculptural painting, and Pattern and Decoration. His enamel-on-aluminum panels and wall sculptures are highly regarded for their inventive use of industrial materials, bold patterning, and their position within the art discourse of the 1980s.
