About the Item
This enigmatic and intriguing sculpture is by Jean-Pierre Morin. The Quebec artist is known for his compelling contemporary work inspired by natural form. This piece, forged from narrow strips of aluminum, are wound around one another to create a cylinder-like hollow form. Is this his interpretation of the galaxy we can see in the night sky? One of a series.
“His art emanates from a deep knowledge of the universe he questions; his vision is not Cartesian, the artist is on the lookout for what surprises, the irrational in the configuration and what is unexpected in the movement of the form.” Isabelle De Mévius, Artistic Director, La Poste Gallery, Montreal
Morin was born in Saint-Anselme de Dorchester, Quebec in 1951. After three years of attending the Saint-Jean-Port-Joli Sculpture School, he completed his studies with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Laval University in Quebec and a Master of Fine Arts, sculpture option, from Concordia University in Montreal. Morin has taught visual arts and both the University and College levels for twenty years. He has exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions in Canada, the US, France, Germany and. Spain. The Quebec artist has produced more than thirty public artworks since 1988.

Jean-Pierre Morin, RCA
“Jean-Pierre Morin has developed art that is simple, original and very poetic. He inhabits the four elements; water, earth, fire and he sculpts the wind.” Isabelle De Mévius, Artistic Director 1700 La Poste Gallery, Montreal Jean-Pierre Morin, RCA (born 1951) is an artist whose artistic practice revolves around public art, with a particular focus on creating visually stunning and monumental artworks. With a strong emphasis on materiality and form, Morin's work aligns with installation art and engages with space and site. Morin pursued sculpture studies in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli from 1968 to 1971. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1978 from Université Laval and a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from Concordia University in 1984. In 2003, the Musée Régional de Rimouski presented a major exhibition titled "De l'objet comme poétique esthétique: Jean-Pierre Morin," showcasing his artwork. In 2008, Morin received the Prix de la Fondation Monique et Robert Parizeau for his artwork "Trombe," which was installed at the Musée National des Beaux-arts du Québec. In 2016, his significant body of work was featured in a comprehensive survey exhibition at the art center 1700 La Poste. On October 24, 1918, Sidney Gordin was born in Chelyabinsk, Russia. He spent his early years in Shanghai, China. At the age of four, he moved with his family to New York. Gordin’s nephew, Eliot Nemzer recalls that when Gordin was a child he attended “a dinner party with his parents. Someone showed him a book of pictures that when thumbed through quickly made the image appear to move. This person then gave him a wad of blank papers and something to write with. Sid created a similar type of moving image with his materials. All the adults at the party became quite excited [and] praised his efforts. Sid told me he thought this was a pivotal experience in guiding him towards his vocation.” During his formative years at Brooklyn Technical High School, he briefly contemplated the idea of becoming an architect; yet, by the time he enrolled at Cooper Union, he was determined to become a professional artist. There, he studied under Morris Kantor (1896-1974) and Leo Katz...
