About the Item
A striking wall sculpture composed of salvaged wood, Sunshine and Shadow exemplifies Laura Petrovich-Cheney’s signature fusion of craft, memory, and resilience. Drawing from the traditions of quilting and textile design, this geometric composition features concentric patterns of triangles and rectangles, each fragment of wood retaining its original color and texture. The work is a meditation on loss and renewal, created from materials reclaimed from homes destroyed during Hurricane Sandy—including the artist’s own.
Petrovich-Cheney’s process honors the histories embedded in each piece of wood, never painting the surfaces but instead allowing their weathered hues to speak. The result is a mosaic-like “wood quilt” that evokes both domestic intimacy and architectural structure. Rounding the Corner invites viewers to consider the fragility of memory and the strength found in reconstruction.
