This wall-mounted mixed media piece merges embroidery, sculptural textile elements, and a suspended circular painting in a visually eccentric and playful composition. Gato y pis belongs to María Magán’s series Ni antes ni después, and presents a narrative fragment from an imagined domestic hallucination: a pink fluid flows elegantly across a white embroidered hoop, hanging below a vintage floral textile where fabric limbs form the shape of an invisible feline. The word “MIAU” is embroidered repeatedly in cursive across the top, conjuring the presence of a cat that is both absent and active, absurd and intimate.
Inspired by a surreal re-reading of Lewis Carroll’s Alice, the series navigates the threshold between fantasy and delirium, where perception is fluid and scale is distorted. The invisible cat that pees pink wine references the Cheshire Cat’s mischief and Magán’s playful treatment of bodily functions, revealing her interest in dissolving boundaries between the tender and the grotesque, the decorative and the abject.
Technically, the work combines cotton textiles, embroidery, painted wood, and a custom embroidery hoop with hand-painted acrylic detail. The palette—dominated by floral pastels and the shocking accent of pink wine—enhances the domestic atmosphere while introducing subtle dissonance. Through these layered material gestures, Gato y pis invites viewers to reconsider domestic iconography through a surreal and humorous lens, blending pop symbolism, bodily suggestion, and soft sculptural intervention.

María Magán
(Galicia, Spain) is a multidisciplinary visual artist and PhD in Fine Arts from the University of Vigo. Her practice explores textile art, painting, and installation, using sewing as a creative process that moves between political activism and poetic recreation. Founder of art collectives and cultural spaces such as La doce and LIBA colectivo, Magán combines artistic creation with cultural project management. She has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions across Spain and Portugal, including the Hybrid Art Fair (Madrid) and shows at institutions like the Fundación Museo de Artes de Ribeira. Her sensitive and experimental work weaves new material narratives connecting memory, identity, and territory.
