About the Item

Masatoyo Kishi (Japanese‑American, 1924 - 2017) was an artist whose career bridged East and West, combining his early studies in physics and mathematics with a long‑standing commitment to abstraction and sculpture. Born in Sakai, Japan, Kishi initially worked in painting and joined the Tekkei Kai group of abstract painters in the Kansai region. He moved to the United States in the early 1960s and later turned increasingly to sculptural forms in stone and metal. His work is marked by a balance of disciplined geometry, Japanese Zen influence, and a sensuous exploration of surface and volume. Kishi’s sculptures and paintings are held in a number of major public institutions including the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto and the Oakland Museum of California. In this exhibit, two carved and polished abstract stone sculptures by Kishi capture his elegantly restrained sense of form and understanding of material.

As much as Takei’s pieces are Cubist in nature there is also an unmistakable Asian influence in the working method of the Japanese native. A quiet solidarity and respect for the individual parts set the pieces apart from the noisy commentary that Cubism often invokes. Takei’s pieces are minimal in nature, but powerful in presence and seem to reference the interlocking sculptures...
