Nocturnal Parts - abstract geometric contemporary modern painting relief
Located in Doetinchem, NL
Nocturnal Parts is a unique one-of-a-kind contemporary modern painting relief by Dutch artist Sander Martijn Jonker. It is a relief consisting of two open spherical parts with an intriguing matte black finish, perhaps a bit mysterious but very beautifully made. It can be hanged in two different ways, with the opening between the two spherical elements either facing away or facing the observer. Depending where the light comes from one might decide for the one or the other hanging method.
Sander Martijn Jonker (1977, Netherlands) graduated from the St. Joost School of Art & Design in Den Bosch, The Netherlands. He primarily makes three-dimensional reliefs that play with the tension between abstraction and representation, surface and space. Light, shadow and their elusive ever-changing properties play an important role. Although the resulting works are abstract, he uses everyday reality as a starting and/or reference point.
His work is created through forms of manipulation, distortion, repetition and simplification. Some works arise from the repetition of a simple movement or form, others are made by exploring how far he can go with the deformation and manipulation of the material, after which he captures and preserves the shape.
He experiences daily life as uncontrollable and at times confusing. In order to cope with that, he is always looking for patterns and has gradually developed various rituals and ways of control, hoping they can offer him certainty and reassurance. His work and person are inextricably connected. He makes the things he makes because he doesn’t have a choice. He is trying to get a grip...

Covered Parts 2413 - abstract geometric contemporary modern painting relief
Located in Doetinchem, NL
Covered Parts 2413 is a unique one-of-a-kind contemporary modern painting relief by Dutch artist Sander Martijn Jonker. His reliefs are made by creating a unique single-use mould in which layers of jute-reinforced acrylic resin are meticulously shaped into three-dimensional forms, sometimes more geometric, sometimes more organic. The resin in this bluish-white relief is filled with a pigmented sand, finished with a high-quality wax and nicely mounted in a bespoke beech veneered mdf frame which enables hanging in four different ways.

About the Folds Series
The folds are made in a single motion allowing gravity, chance and the mood of the day to all play a part in sculpting the final structure. This creates a dynamic artwork where light circulates on the surface and shadows are projected on the surrounding wall. The effect creates an expandable reach that is engaging to the viewer from every angle.
As an artist, I look for the unseen patterns and hidden narratives that reveal the magnificence in all things. Robert Henri said, "Paint the spirit of the bird rather than its feathers." There is a still point in every moment and to capture this essential luminescence is to acknowledge the ancient wisdom in all things. I make use of archetypes from the cultural and mystical history that connects all humans and all life forms. Joseph Campbell...
