Sculpture by Brazilian-born artist Elizabeth Freire. Sculpture is mounted on marble base and signed "EF". B&W photo is of Ms. Freire with renowned sculptor Etienne Martin at the Ecole Nationals des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
Elizabeth Freire is a Brazilian-born, contemporary American artist. At the age of eighteen, she left Rio de Janeiro and moved to Paris to study sculpture at l’Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts, receiving her Diploma there in 1979 under the direction of Claude Viseux, Etienne Martin, and Cesar. During that time she worked as an apprentice at the Fonderie de France where she learned bronze technique and she also attended etching courses at l’Ecole de Montparnasse.
In 1976, she won a commission to make three life-size figures representing the printing company, “Les Imprimeries de Boulogne,” at the International Printing Fair in Paris. She spent 1977 in Aix-en-Provence where she carved the local stone of Rogne.
Returning to Paris, the painter Lutka Pink introduced her to Otero, Frans Krajcberg and Hajdu from whom she received valuable lessons. In 1978, she traveled to Brazil where she was invited to participate in the exhibit ‘A Century of Sculpture in Brazil’. She also met with the sculptor Sergio Camargo...

Untitled, orange biomorphic flora-like ceramic sculpture, 2015
Located in New York, NY
Christopher Adams creates sculptures that play on biological concepts, specifically adaptive radiation, whereby a pioneering organism enters an untapped environment and then differentiates rapidly without departing too much from its original form. His sculptures suggest varieties of creatures, but not necessarily a specific organism. Many works are suggestive of plant life with leafy tendrils and frayed edges. Adams graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College...

Picasso Madoura Ceramic A.R. 520 Fluffy-Haired Woman
Located in Boca Raton, FL
Pablo Picasso A.R. 520
Fluffy-Haired Woman
1964
13” x 10” Edition of 100
Red earthenware clay, printed with engobe pad
Ramie 520 is a Madoura ceramic that one rarely sees come on the market.
The photo you see here is the actual piece that you will receive. Most sellers online post using stock photos that don’t necessarily match exactly to the piece you receive.
This particular piece is pristine: there are no nicks, bruises or scratches of any kind. Be careful when buying from others – the pieces sometimes have nicks or scratches.
The Certificate of Authenticity comes with this piece.
We have sold over 3300 pieces with all positive reviews.
The "Fluffy-Haired Woman" (Tête de femme, Cheveux bouclés) is a ceramic plate designed by Pablo Picasso and produced at the Madoura Pottery studio. This piece is part of Picasso's extensive work in ceramics during the mid-20th century, where he explored new forms of artistic expression beyond his renowned paintings and sculptures.
Here are some key details about this particular piece:
Title: Tête de femme, Cheveux bouclés (Fluffy-Haired Woman)
Date: 1969
Edition: Ramie 520
Medium: Ceramic plate
Dimensions: Approximately 26 cm (10.2 inches) in diameter
Edition Size: Limited edition, often part of a numbered series
The Madoura Pottery studio in Vallauris, France, where this piece was produced, was a significant place for Picasso's ceramic work. He collaborated closely with the owners, Suzanne and Georges Ramié, to create a wide range of ceramics, including plates, vases, and pitchers, all featuring his distinctive artistic style.
The "Fluffy-Haired Woman" plate is a representation of Picasso's playful and innovative approach to ceramics, combining his mastery of line and form with the unique qualities of the ceramic medium. Collectors and art enthusiasts highly value these pieces for their artistic significance and the insight they provide into Picasso's creative process.
We are located in the USA. When you buy from a foreign seller on 1stdibs, you have to consider the problems of getting the piece through Customs. There are often delays and considerable fees to pay in order to import the item.
When purchasing from us, we ship the same day and you receive it via FedEx the next day, no problems or hassles.
When you purchase from an auction house, you pay a buyer’s premium of anywhere from 23% to 28% over the “hammer price”. So when you “win” an auction for $20,000, the actual price paid is more like $25,000. By contrast, when purchasing from us, the price agreed to is the price paid by the buyer, no hidden fees.
When you purchase from an auction house, you pay the packing and shipping fees, which are usually exorbitant. By contrast, when purchasing from us, the price includes packing and shipping.
When you purchase from an auction house, the sale is final. If you receive the piece and are not 100% satisfied with it, there is nothing you can do about it. You are stuck with it. By contrast, when purchasing from us, the buyer can determine if they want to keep it. If not, the buyer returns to piece to us for full refund, and we pay the shipping both ways!
The prices of Picasso Madoura Ceramics have been on fire lately (no pun intended). The major auction houses – Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Phillips – have now been regularly holding Picasso Madoura Ceramic auctions...

"FOR THE OLD ONES", sculpture, clay, abstract, contemporary, ceramic, tribal
Located in Toronto, Ontario
FOR THE OLD ONES, a ceramic sculpture of high-fired clay pigmented with oxides, sitting on a slab of limestone. It is a recent work by artist Harold Wortsman. Note the blending of volumetric and organic form in this work, the mark-making and perforations on the surface, the striking colors of black and copper in variable stripes – it is characteristic of his practice – warm, contemporary, uniquely crafted, yet speaks to ancient, primitive traditions of art-making that cross cultures and histories. Highly attuned to the art of Africa, the Middle East, India and Asia, his forms are organic abstracts with masculine and feminine attributes that resonate together as a pleasing enigma. They make sense immediately, yet never give up all their secrets.
From Harold Wortsman – "With sculpture, my material of choice is high-fired clay. Pieces are first low-fired in an electric kiln. I do not use glazes. Instead, I use oxides applied to the bisqued (low-fired) clay. As with a tattoo, oxides permit the surface underneath to breathe—like naked skin. The work is then high-fired in a gas kiln with double reduction to cone 10. The final temperature is 2,300 degrees F. At a certain point, oxygen intake is reduced to the kiln. Because the fire has reached a critical mass, it needs oxygen and chemically takes it from the clay and the oxides painted on. Like a jazz improvisation, each kiln load comes out slightly different."
From Jonathan Goodman, Poet & Art Critic – "Wortsman re-examines ancient and modern traditions in light of what it means to make art." – Tussle Magazine, July 2019.
Harold Wortsman is a sculptor and printmaker based in Brooklyn, NY. He “creates forms that bring to mind archaic cult objects and exude a quiet concentrated strength.” (Argauer Zeitung, Switzerland). His work, an edgy mix of freedom and clarity, can be found in public and private collections in the US, including The Library of Congress, Yale University, The New York Public Library Print Collection, The New York Historical Society, Smith College, Indiana University’s Lilly Library, Brandeis University, The Newark Public Library Special Collections Division, and the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum Print Archive. Also in private and public collections in Europe, including the Municipal Collection of the City of Brugg, Switzerland.
Harold studied at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture, with sculptor George Spaventa...

Mariko Brown Harkin about her work:
"My fascination with pottery comes from my desire to make art and to produce something that is not only functional but visually appealing. Porcelain allows me stretch and shape the clay in any way I choose and offers a blank canvas for my floral imagery and luscious, rich glazes to blend. The forms I create are tight and precise with a sense of restricted volume. I use bands around the form to constrict specific areas of each piece, while at the same time creating space for the volume and fullness to escape. The bands create registers to frame my drawings and paintings of floral imagery.
The way I combine surface and form is inspired by Ming Dynasty porcelain...

SPHERE", sculpture, clay, abstract, geometric, installation
Located in Toronto, Ontario
CUBE, PYRAMID & SPHERE is a major work created over a five-year period. It is a variable installation, composed of 4 geometric sculptures of high-fired clay pigmented with oxides, a block of wood found in the ocean, river gravel, limestone, and slate shattered to fragments. Note the surface textures, the ground of natural stone, the colors black, umber, copper and tan throughout, the pattern of slate fragments. CUBE, PYRAMID & SPHERE is characteristic of Wortman's practice – warm, contemporary, uniquely crafted, yet speaks to ancient, primitive traditions of art-making that cross cultures and histories. Highly attuned to the art of Africa, the Middle East, India and Asia, his forms are organic abstracts with masculine and feminine attributes that resonate together as a pleasing enigma. They make sense immediately, yet never give up all their secrets.
