About the Item
Punta 1 is a sculpture made of Black Palissandro marble by Italian contemporary artist Mattia Bosco. This sculpture is made of black Palissandro marble, dimensions are 113 × 78 × 37 cm (44.5 × 30.7 × 14.6 in).
The artist’s approach differs radically from traditional sculpture, where a sculptor begins with a block of stone—believed to contain the imagined form within—and removes excess material to reveal it. For Mattia Bosco, the intervention is far more restrained. His aim is simply to unveil and refine the form that already exists inside the stone. Form and material are inseparable: each stone naturally tends toward a particular shape, making it a sculpture in potential.
Bosco personally selects the rocks that captivate him directly in the quarries, choosing from among the fragments that have been extracted. Once he has found the right piece, he mounts it on a base, sets it upright, and then imprints his own gesture on the stone’s surface using rotary cutters. His process becomes a collaboration with the material: “It’s not a matter of man on one side and the world on the other… the relationship between me, the sculptor, and the material is a struggle between two parts of the same world, each testing its strength.”
This work is a unique piece and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
Mattia Bosco works between Milan and the mountainous Piedmont region. He selects the stones that fascinate him in the quarries, then he draws out and purifies the form already present in the stone by slightly sculpting it and accentuates some sections by applying some gold leaves onto it. The resulting abstract marble sculptures are very elegant and poetic. The sculptor has exhibited his work in several renowned institutions such as the Museum Tinguely in Basel and the Triennale Design and Art Museum in Milan. An installation of twelve marble sculptures was exhibited at the Colosseum Archaeological Park in 2023. “The sculptor’s intervention is a collaboration, following the possibilities that are manifest in the material.”
