About the Item
Sezione Aurea 2024-027 is a unique monumental sculpture by contemporary artist Mattia Bosco. This sculpture is made of Palissandro marble and gold leaf, dimensions are 68 × 44 × 32 cm (26.7 × 17.4 × 12.6 in).
The sculpture comes with a certificate of authenticity.
The artist uses gold leaf to emphasise particular shapes and lines in the stone. This body of work, titled "Sezione aurea" (Latin for "Golden section"), was inspired by the discovery of mica-containing rocks. The artist chose to use gold leaf to crystallise this presence of gold because this mineral gives the stone its sparkle. Gold is compared to light in its solid state by Mattia Bosco, who sees stone as the solid manifestation of time.
The sculpture, crafted from Palissandro marble and gold leaf, reflects the artist's unique process. He describes working outdoors in all conditions, with a hands-on approach that blends intention and spontaneity. Each piece evolves through a balance of action and observation, as he carefully chooses where to shape the stone, aware that he can only pursue a limited set of creative possibilities with each work.
Mattia Bosco works between Milan and the mountainous Piedmont region. He selects the stones that fascinate him in the quarries, then he draws out and purifies the form already present in the stone by slightly sculpting it and accentuates some sections by applying some gold leaves onto it. The resulting abstract marble sculptures are very elegant and poetic. The sculptor has exhibited his work in several renowned institutions such as the Museum Tinguely in Basel and the Triennale Design and Art Museum in Milan. An installation of twelve marble sculptures was exhibited at the Colosseum Archaeological Park in 2023. “The sculptor’s intervention is a collaboration, following the possibilities that are manifest in the material.”
