About the Item
Sezione Aurea-C1 is a unique sculpture by contemporary artist Mattia Bosco. This sculpture is made of Palissandro marble and gold leaf, dimensions are 270 × 100 × 52 cm (106.3 × 39.3 × 20.4 in)
This piece belongs to a trio of sculptures created specifically for the 2023 edition of the White Carrara Festival. Reflecting on the project, Mattia Bosco explains: “It was important for me to choose a location where the sculptures I envisioned could come to life in the best possible conditions. I remembered the Carrara cathedral, uniquely positioned—set back, its façade almost concealed by surrounding houses. Its long, marble side wall, without windows except for a small door, offered the ideal backdrop for an uninterrupted view of the sculptures.”
To highlight certain contours and lines, the artist applied gold leaf directly onto the stone. This body of work, titled Sezione aurea (“Golden Section”), originates from his study of stones containing mica. Because this mineral causes the stone to shimmer, Bosco chose to “fix” this gleam by integrating real gold leaf. For him, if stone represents time in its most solid form, gold can be seen as light made tangible.
The Michelangelo statuary marble used for this sculpture is sourced from the quarries of Carrara, Tuscany—sites renowned since antiquity. Celebrated for its fine grain and exceptional whiteness, Carrara marble is highly valued for its almost complete lack of veining. The marble for this piece comes specifically from the same caves once visited by Michelangelo himself, who selected blocks here nearly five centuries ago. Several of his masterpieces, including the sublime Pietà, were carved from marble extracted in these very quarries.
Mattia Bosco works between Milan and the mountainous Piedmont region. He selects the stones that fascinate him in the quarries, then he draws out and purifies the form already present in the stone by slightly sculpting it and accentuates some sections by applying some gold leaves onto it. The resulting abstract marble sculptures are very elegant and poetic. The sculptor has exhibited his work in several renowned institutions such as the Museum Tinguely in Basel and the Triennale Design and Art Museum in Milan. An installation of twelve marble sculptures was exhibited at the Colosseum Archaeological Park in 2023. “The sculptor’s intervention is a collaboration, following the possibilities that are manifest in the material.”
