Pascal Pierme
Pascal's career has blossomed in America. Galleries and collectors alike have responded to his approach's simplicity, balancing geometric abstraction with organic form. There is an undertone of symbolism as well, a hieroglyphic shorthand that hints at other visual languages. Pascal was influenced from a very young age by his grandfather, a wood sculptor. It was from him that Pascal developed his love for wood and his passion for working with it. He creates an extraordinary range of abstract meditations that seem to arise directly from the material itself, rather than from a conscious plan. He has an extraordinary rapport with his materials, concocting his own varnishes and resins and creating bronze-like patinas on non-metallic surfaces. He works with various precious woods and creates sculptures that express each's texture, aroma, and strength. as he carves and burnishes, he allows the piece to guide him. "Wood has its own intelligence, it knows many things, and it teaches them to me. In this way, I understand what I want to do with it so that the final image reflects its innate qualities as well as my own thoughts and feelings." - Pascal Pierme. "Wood wall sculpture. 48 inches wide. I work with wood like a painter works with oils and a sculptor with stone. From a distance, lines, shapes, contours and shadows are easily seen but when you move from side to side, the change in perspective alters the image like the features of a face when it turns. If a light source moves, shadows in the piece move with it like the sun moving across a landscape. As you approach the piece, shallow contours appear like swells on a lake and intricate patterns emerge. You can't help but touch the smooth flowing surface to feel the highly finished solid wood. The furniture grade modified tung oil allows that. It also makes my art easy to clean if necessary. The lines and shapes in my art are the natural colors of solid wood joined along curves. No inlays, veneers, dyes or stains are used."

I work with wood like a painter works with oils and a sculptor with stone. UltraMarine is a mixed media wall sculpture. Made from acrylic washes on birch, MDF and gold metallic Venetian plaster paint. Finished with an elegant satin clear lacquer to enhance the wood grain. The multiple opacities of navy and indigo are almost denim-like in color and allow the brown wood grain to add texture and interest to the piece. Ultramarine takes on the abstract form of a soaring building or perhaps a church spire or other tall building in form. Ultramarine is a monochromatic piece which is minimalistic in nature, so the form, composition and the balance of the piece trump a definitive subject matter.
