About the Item
Helicoil is a fired clay constructed sculpture by Patricia Volk, dimensions are 48 × 65 × 45 cm (18.9 × 25.5 × 17.7 in). It is a unique signed piece and comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.
Patricia Volk’s abstract sculptures emerge from a distinctive interplay between form and colour. Her creative process begins with clay, her preferred material, which she cuts and shapes in pursuit of the perfect line—a line that is at once simple and dynamic. The individual pieces are then fired and assembled to form the final sculpture. As Volk explains: “There is no pre-thought at all, it either works or it does not. There is such simplicity in a good line that it is completely underestimated, because it is so incredibly difficult […] but so aesthetically pleasing.”
Influenced by the American tradition of painted fired clay, Patricia applies acrylic paint to her sculptures, selecting colour combinations intuitively yet with careful consideration. The bold, vibrant hues highlight the sculpture’s contours and enhance the tension between strength and fragility, stability and precariousness, heaviness and lightness. Through these contrasts, her works can evoke a range of impressions for the viewer—tranquillity, conflict, or the sensation of movement.
Patricia Volk is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Sculptors (FRSS), a historic British organisation dedicated to promoting excellence in sculpture, and an Academician of the Royal West of England Academy (RWA). Her work was recently featured in the book 50 Women Sculptors, alongside renowned artists such as Camille Claudel, Barbara Hepworth, Niki de Saint Phalle, and Louise Bourgeois.

Patricia Volk
Patricia Volk’s abstract sculptures are born from the unique combination of two elements, namely form and colour. The intense and vibrant colours used emphasise the shapes of the sculpture, the balances and contrasts between power and fragility, stability and precariousness, heaviness and lightness. Patricia Volk is a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors, an old English organisation promoting excellence in sculpture, and an Academician of the Royal West of England Academ. Her work was recently featured in the book “50 Women Sculptors”, alongside that of very famous artists such as Camille Claudel, Niki de Saint Phalle and Louise Bourgeois. “My obsession is catching a very simple form or line, primarily, then enhancing it with colour. Sometimes I use juxtapositions of two forms that I hope suggest contradictions of strength and fragility, stability and precariousness – like the relationships between human beings.”
