About the Item

Bronze / brass strip / composite Unique variation Stamped with monogram signature and uniquely numbered 759A Natural bronze remains on the sun but is treated with a translucent golden brown patination on the hills. Weight 7.25kgs Philip Hearsey, born in 1946, is a renowned British sculptor living and working in Longtown, Herefordshire, UK. Hearsey received formal training at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, where he developed the foundations of his art. Before devoting himself fully to sculpture, he spent many years in the field of architecture and construction, which influenced his perception of forms and materials. Hearsey specializes in sand casting, an ancient and direct method of creating bronze sculptures. Unlike the lost-wax technique widely used in art foundries, sand casting imposes simplicity of form and method. This process celebrates the raw, noble quality of bronze, creating solid, visually fascinating and often tactile works. Hearsey embraces the unique flaws and imperfections of each sculpture, seeing them as elements that add to their beauty and individuality. Philip Hearsey prefers to keep the thought process behind each work private, leaving room for the viewer's personal interpretation. The titles of his sculptures are deliberately ambiguous, inviting each viewer to create their own understanding and connection with the work. Themes of erosion, nature and time play a crucial role in his work, reflecting his appreciation of natural processes and their impact on materials. Hearsey uses a variety of methods to color and patinate its bronze sculptures. The most common method is to oxidize or patinate the bronze, using controlled chemical reactions to achieve varied and unique color effects. In addition to patinas, he sometimes applies transparent acrylic washes, oil washes or colored waxes to enrich the finish of his works. The combination of patinas and paints allows for a wider range of colors and a more vivid finish. All his colorations are protected by a marine-grade lacquer and/or wax, ensuring their durability and brilliance. Philip Hearsey has exhibited his work throughout Britain, gaining recognition for his distinctive approach and technical expertise. Each sculpture is uniquely signed and numbered, underlining the individuality and originality of his work.
