The title of this sculpture conjures the dynamic beauty of a coastal landscape. Soft turquoise tones echo the movement of sea waves, while deep black accents bring contrast and depth, recalling rugged cliffs. These painted sculptures are a playful investigation into colour, material, and surface—juxtaposing transparency and opacity, shifting between tangible form and illusionary depth. As the artist explains: “It’s an open-ended process; I don’t know where I’m going, but I know when I have arrived.”
This piece exemplifies the geometric vocabulary Perry developed in the 2010s, now a hallmark of his current work. While he also works in bronze and ceramic, his preferred medium is stone—granite, marble, limestone, red sandstone, and alabaster—sourced from quarries in England, Ireland, and Italy.
Richard Perry’s practice is centred on the dialogue between shape and material, and their interaction with space and light. Planes, lines, surfaces, and voids combine to create an elegant, balanced solidity, emblematic of his abstract sculptural forms.
His creative process is both intuitive and deliberate, the two impulses in constant dialogue until “the sculpture has a character of its own and becomes surprising.”
