About the Item

No.201125 an abstract sculpture in wood by French sculptor Thierry Martenon. Walnut wood, India ink patina, 35.4 x 13 x 5.9 inches (90 × 33 × 15 cm). This piece, with its marked verticality and symbolic motifs, is reminiscent of the aesthetics of totemic sculptures. This artwork combines two different textures on its surface. Thierry Martenon’s sculptures are characterized by their clean, simple lines, harmonious, flowing forms and refined, meticulously crafted textures. His artistic approach is profoundly aesthetic and based on remarkable technical mastery. His creations embody timeless elegance, while demonstrating a constant quest for renewal and originality. Thierry Martenon lives and works in his native village in the Chartreuse massif in Savoie. The mountains and the forest are part of his daily life and a constant source of inspiration. The shapes and textures he observes in nature, whether rocks, bark or mushrooms, feed his creations. Thierry Martenon carves his pieces using traditional woodworking tools, drawing on the expertise he has acquired through his cabinet-making experience. For the finishing touches, he explores a variety of unusual techniques such as brushing, burning, sandblasting and engraving, as well as applying Indian ink patinas and lacquers. The aim of this work is to create highly textured pieces capable of capturing the light. A superb interplay of light and shadow enhances the wood, giving it a sense of movement.
