About the Item
F.250901 is a glass sculpture from the series “Form” by Japanese contemporary artist Toshio Iezumi, dimensions are 9 × 17 × 15 cm (3.5 × 6.7 × 5.9 in). The sculpture is signed and numbered, it is part of a limited edition of 12 editions and 4 artist's proofs, it comes with a certificate of authenticity.
The Japanese artist’s glass sculptures engage the viewer through their inherent dynamism and a refined, meditative presence. This work reveals delicate gradations of deep and translucent turquoise-green, forming volumes that appear at once substantial and immaterial, inviting reflection on inner light and depth. Subtle optical phenomena—distortions, reflections, and shifts in perception—emerge across the surface, while the softly curved, polished contours suggest a quiet sense of movement.
Glass, with its exceptional capacity to capture and refract light, lies at the heart of the work and is masterfully handled through the artist’s technical precision and long experience. The sculpture’s smooth, horizontal, egg-like form draws profound inspiration from nature: the stillness of settled water, the softened surfaces of river stones, and the fundamental curves found in the natural world.
Toshio Iezumi’s creative process is both time-intensive and highly technical. He begins by laminating multiple sheets of glass—naturally tinged green by their iron content—into a dense block of richly layered colour. Using an angle grinder, a tool more commonly associated with stone carving, he carefully sculpts the final form. The surface is then progressively refined with increasingly fine abrasives to eliminate all traces of tooling. In the final stage, meticulous polishing with a felt wheel restores the glass’s pristine transparency, dramatically transforming its visual impact. Iezumi seeks a precise balance between the structural definition achieved through grinding and the luminous surface revealed through polishing, allowing the work’s expressive potential to fully emerge.
Created as part of the Form series, initiated in 1998, this sculpture exemplifies the artist’s sustained exploration of rounded and oval geometries. Its seamless, organic silhouette immediately captures and holds the viewer’s gaze, conveying an exceptional delicacy that is further enriched by the deep blue and green hues visible within the layered glass.

Toshio Iezumi
Toshio Iezumi has dedicated over thirty years to working with glass. The artist creates unique sculptures using sheets of glass and a complex technique traditionally used for carving stone. His abstract artworks change appearance depending on where they are placed and the position of the viewer. Depending on whether they reflect light or let it filter through, his sculptures give off inexhaustible visual effects. Since 1985, Toshio Iezumi has exhibited in dozens of museums, galleries and art fairs worldwide. His works are included in several major public collections: the New York Museum of Art and Design, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art. “When shape and texture are well balanced, an ordinary object becomes extraordinary – an artwork.”
