About the Item
M.250901is a glass sculpture from the series “Move” by Japanese contemporary artist Toshio Iezumi, dimensions are 35 × 12 × 10 cm (13.7 × 4.7 × 3.9 in). The sculpture is signed and numbered, it is part of a limited edition of 8 editions and 4 artist's proofs, it comes with a certificate of authenticity.
This striking sculpted glass work captivates through its elegant, expressive form and its constantly shifting visual presence. Subtle gradations of deep and pale blue-green tones create a sense of mass that feels at once solid and ethereal, inviting the viewer to look beyond the surface and into the sculpture’s inner structure.
Unexpected refractions animate the polished exterior, while the rhythmic interplay of concave and convex curves generates a powerful sense of movement around a central void. Glass—renowned for its ability to bend, capture, and disperse light—serves as the core medium of the work, mastered here through the artist’s exceptional technical skill. The sculpture’s smooth, organic, crescent-like silhouette echoes natural phenomena: wind rippling across a landscape, the flow of ocean currents, or the time-worn softness of river stones.
Toshio Iezumi’s creative process is meticulous and highly specialized. It begins with the lamination of multiple glass sheets, naturally tinted blue-green by their iron content, which are fused into a dense, richly colored block. Using an angle grinder—an unconventional tool in glassmaking more commonly associated with masonry—he precisely sculpts the form. Successive stages of abrasive grinding eliminate surface irregularities, culminating in a final polishing with a felt pad that restores full transparency and dramatically transforms the sculpture’s optical depth. Iezumi’s objective is to achieve a perfect equilibrium between form, shaped through grinding, and surface, refined through polishing, thereby intensifying the work’s expressive power.
Created as part of the Move series, initiated in the 2000s, this sculpture embodies both commanding presence and inherent delicacy. In this body of work, Iezumi explores wave-like motion, shaping the surface with alternating depressions and protrusions to suggest continuous, flowing energy. At times, a subtly mirrored element is embedded within the core, further enhancing the interplay of light, reflection, and movement that defines the series.

Toshio Iezumi
Toshio Iezumi has dedicated over thirty years to working with glass. The artist creates unique sculptures using sheets of glass and a complex technique traditionally used for carving stone. His abstract artworks change appearance depending on where they are placed and the position of the viewer. Depending on whether they reflect light or let it filter through, his sculptures give off inexhaustible visual effects. Since 1985, Toshio Iezumi has exhibited in dozens of museums, galleries and art fairs worldwide. His works are included in several major public collections: the New York Museum of Art and Design, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art. “When shape and texture are well balanced, an ordinary object becomes extraordinary – an artwork.”
