This striking glass sculpture captivates with its refined, poetic presence and constantly shifting visual qualities. Composed of swirling tones of intensely saturated yet crystal-clear green, the work generates volumes that feel at once tangible and illusory, inviting the viewer to explore and decipher its inner spaces. Subtle distortions ripple across the surface, while a strong sense of movement emerges from the alternating concave and convex forms that spiral along the vertical axis.
Glass itself becomes the true protagonist of the piece—its capacity to refract, reflect, and transform light fully revealed through the artist’s exceptional mastery. The sculpture’s tall, organic, hourglass-like silhouette draws inspiration from nature’s fluid rhythms: wind moving across water or grass, the undulating patterns of the sea, and the smooth, rounded forms of stones.
Toshio Iezumi’s sculptural process is both lengthy and intricate. He begins by bonding sheets of glass—naturally tinted green due to their iron content—into a dense, richly colored block. Using an angle grinder, a tool more commonly associated with stone carving, he carefully sculpts the form. This is followed by successive stages of abrasion to eliminate surface marks. The final step is an exacting polishing process using a felt buff, which brings the sculpture to a state of pristine transparency, dramatically transforming its appearance. Throughout this process, Iezumi seeks a precise equilibrium between form achieved through grinding and surface refinement attained through polishing, ensuring the sculpture’s full visual impact.
Belonging to the Move series, initiated in the 2000s, this vertical sculpture conveys a presence that is both powerful and delicate. Within this body of work, Iezumi focuses on the dynamics of waves, skillfully alternating convex and concave surfaces to instill a continuous sense of motion. At times, he incorporates a semi-transparent mirror within the piece, further enhancing the play of reflection and the diffusion of light.

Toshio Iezumi
Toshio Iezumi has dedicated over thirty years to working with glass. The artist creates unique sculptures using sheets of glass and a complex technique traditionally used for carving stone. His abstract artworks change appearance depending on where they are placed and the position of the viewer. Depending on whether they reflect light or let it filter through, his sculptures give off inexhaustible visual effects. Since 1985, Toshio Iezumi has exhibited in dozens of museums, galleries and art fairs worldwide. His works are included in several major public collections: the New York Museum of Art and Design, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art. “When shape and texture are well balanced, an ordinary object becomes extraordinary – an artwork.”
