About the Item
Fabulous deco penguin design- bronze cigar stand by Connecticut sculptor Robert Garret Thew, (1892-1964).
Signed on the base "G.Thew" and dated 1929. In excellent condition with a beautiful green patina.
Stands 23 5/8 inches high and 13 inches in diameter.
Robert Garret Thew was born in 1892 in Sharon Connecticut and studied Fine Art at Syracuse University. He also studied painting under George Bellows at the Art Student's League NYC. After serving in the U S Army 1918-1919, he was employed at the J. Walter Thomson Agency where he introduced the use of color in magazine advertising. He married Elsie Greene in 1923 and moved to Westport, Connecticut where he formed the Artistic Bronze Foundry to produce sculptures of his creation. In the five years prior to the market Crash of '29 he produced small sculptures for lamps, doorstops, trivets, bookends, etc.
