About the Item

Title : Raw Material #5 Materials : Low-fire ceramic, glass, earth from the grave of the artist’s father, crushed horse’s jawbone Date : 2018 Dimensions : 6.5x16.5x16.5in Description : Specially designed container, cast ceramic objects, and found objects Anthony Stellaccio is a freelance artist and scholar educated in both fine art and folklore. A member of the American Folklore Society, the American Ceramic Circle, and the International Academy of Ceramics, Stellaccio is an active artist, writer, and has worked with and for museums in both the USA and Eastern Europe. Most notable among his professional accomplishments are a book on Lithuanian folk pottery and three years spent serving the Smithsonian, National Museum of African Art. Stellaccio writes frequently for Ceramics Monthly, Ceramics Art and Perception, and for Ferrin Contemporary. Stellaccio was born in Muncie, Indiana in 1978 and currently lives in no place in particular. Statement: I must, to begin, accept that my life will always be haunted by the specters of loss. And so the objects I create begin at sites of memory and of mourning – a cemetery, the home of a loved one, or a historical site to which I can connect emotionally. I collect earth and objects from all of these spaces, sometimes leaving what I can in their place and sometimes incorporating the sacrifice of irreplaceable objects into my work. Theses rituals of my creative process are confrontational and cathartic, and the creation of beauty and art is mostly incidental.
