Daphne Sweet is a contemporary artist based in Butte, Montana, whose work intertwines personal narrative, mythology, and the landscapes of the American West. Born in Los Angeles and raised in a family of strong matriarchal figures, Sweet’s artistic journey was shaped by the stories, creativity, and resilience of the women around her. This foundation informs her practice, where themes of transformation, feminine power, and the liminality between myth and reality take center stage.
Sweet’s work spans painting, watercolor, drawing, clothing, and ceramics, yet remains unified by a distinctive illustrative style. Her compositions, reminiscent of illuminated manuscripts, balance intricate brushwork with bold, contemporary storytelling. Influenced by the figures of the High Renaissance and the movement of Rococo aesthetics, she creates layered, narrative-rich pieces that merge historical artistic traditions with modern sensibilities.
In her ongoing body of work, She Rides the Sky, Sweet explores the mythic landscapes of the American West, where celestial horses and golden cows serve as symbols of strength, transformation, and freedom. Through detailed yet expansive compositions, she reimagines archetypal figures—blurring the boundaries between past and present, myth and personal history—to reflect on resilience, identity, and the vastness of self-discovery.
A graduate of the University of Montana with a background in studio art and art history, Sweet has exhibited nationally, from galleries in New York City to large-scale murals in Miami. Her work continues to evolve, drawing from the ever-shifting intersection of history, myth, and personal experience.
