GENERATION GAP -This is a delightful, happy, and playful piece. Henry Moore, Naguchi, Brancusi, and other sculptors over centuries have had a tendency to stack things. This piece has a major air space under the piece in order to capture the treads of the tires that I found along the highway on a trip back from Los Angeles. Adding on top of the tires is rope wound up, a marble box that cannot open, and the handle of a frying pan all put together to create a figure called “The King.” It is reminiscent of a piece in a chess set, folk art, and my feeling in society that we are leaders – a people of common means and backgrounds made up of ordinary parts. People are not really trained to be leaders today. There are a number of stories where people in leadership positions came from nowhere. We had a professional wrestler that became the Governor of Minnesota; Actors as the President, governors of states. But, this is part of the American culture: everybody has a chance to pursue his or her dream. Anybody can be anything no matter how well prepared or not they are. This piece is called, The King of Things, because it is made out of everyday things and now it is suddenly in a position of being King. The marble box cannot open goes back to a study that I read that men are less likely to work outside of the box than women. In my experience, I have seen great leadership from women. In my University experience, women are much more open to new ideas than are some of the men that I have worked with. I speak through objects and in doing so I make thought visible. First and foremost the piece has to work visually in form, color, and composition. Each piece is harmoniously assembled combining objects, with no prior association, thus inviting the viewer to think/ponder, “How does this work?” Looking at art is an eye opening experience. I try to make work that makes you want to know more. I want my work to leave its audience with inquiry, evoking questions like, “What does this mean and how is this made?” I enjoy creating work that transcends with the viewer’s preference, thus, challenging and altering their preconceived thoughts. Each individual conceptualizes the work uniquely through personal association. The variation of these interpretations is refreshingly imaginative. My roots can be traced back to ceramics. I struggled with the instability of this material and found many of its characteristics to be limiting. This lead me to Pietrasanta, Italy and the discovery of stone and bronze opening up the possibility of creating larger scale artwork of variable dimensions, 10 lbs, to 50 ton.
