About the Item

An important grand tour Antonio Canova Ebe (Aprés), carved in white marble by an Italian sculptor artist in the 19th century from a block of white marble. The work depicts the goddess Hebe, daughter of Zeus and Hera and handmaiden and cupbearer of the gods of Olympus. Hebe is depicted as she walks with a light step, almost like a dancer, immersed in a reverent and silent attitude. Suspended on a cloud, the goddess has a refined hairstyle gathered in a diadem and moved by a breath of wind; her torso is naked, while the lower part of her body is wrapped in a cloth that, with its thick and complex folds, enhances her sinuous body. Tracing the composition of several Hellenistic statues, the sculptor artist decided to have the young goddess hold an amphora and a cup of bronze, the material of which the hair ribbon is also made: as already mentioned, after the completion of the work many criticized the bold presence of bronze, judging it an affront to the idea of purity, associated with the use of marble alone.
