About the Item

An impressive and important pair of grand tour sculptures of Lions in the manner of Antonio Canova, carved in bronze and resting on a marble base. The work, depicting a sleeping lion, in correlation with the other lion, this time awake, currently placed in the same room. In fact, these are copies, on a reduced scale and made for visitors who came to Rome following the Grand Tour, of the two lions which are part of the funeral monument to Clement XIII, made in the years 1783-92 by Antonio Canova, and placed in the basilica of St. Peter's in the Vatican. The sleeping lion is a symbol of being "discreet and submissive", humble but regal, while the watchman is understood as an attentive guardian and protector. The original work obviously has to be correlated to the context in which it was conceived by Canova and was extremely successful (it is said that Canova disguised himself as a friar to be able to listen unseen to the enthusiastic comments of the participants in the inauguration), such as induce Canova himself to reuse some elements for new sculptures. For over a century, the Grand Tours have led to the discovery of the historical and artistic beauty of Italy; attached to these itineraries, there was a need on the part of the ever-increasing number of travelers to bring back the souvenirs of their travels. Thus was born, above all in Rome, an equally formidable army of (re)producers: artists and craftsmen of unparalleled talent, who replicated the works of the "great masters", creating what can be defined as the "industry of beauty". Often these were foreign artists who, having arrived in Italy to develop their training in direct contact with beauty and history, then decided to stay there for years or for life, captivated by the beauty of the monuments and nature
