Benedetto Boschetti The Diana of the Versailles Rome, mid-nineteenth century Bronze 49 cm high Signed: ‘B. Boschetti, Roma’ Provenance: Private collection, England The present bronze is a finely cast version of the famed ancient marble group known as The Diana of Versailles, or the Goddess of the Hunt, now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris. The goddess - Diana to the Romans, Artemis to the Greeks - was Apollo's twin sister and was the guardian of chastity and a tireless hunter. The original marble was gifted by Pope Paul IV to the French king Henri II, it was the only ancient marble statue exported from Italy before the second half of the seventeenth century. Carved in life size and standing around 2 meters high, the work was first recorded at the Royal Palace of Fontainebleau in 1586. In 1602, the sculptor Barthélemy Prieur revised its restorations before it was moved to Paris, becoming the centrepiece in the decorated marble chamber of the Louvre. Prieur also made the first bronze copy in 1605 for the fountain at Fontainebleau, to replace the original marble that had been removed from the palace. Hubert le Sueur also made a famous version of it for the English King Charles I in 1634, which is now at Windsor Castle. However, by the second half of the eighteenth century the Diana of Versailles was reproduced in a range of media and sizes, including plaster, lead and earthenware. Benedetto Boschetti is celebrated as one of the most talented sculptors and bronze casters who worked in Rome during the middle decades of the nineteenth century. Boschetti established a successful workshop on the via Condotti, making finely cast bronze statuettes after the most famous ancient sculptures in the city. In 1867, John Murray wrote in his influential ‘Handbook for Travelers of Rome and its environs’: “This Establishment is – particularly – conspicuous for its great variety of marble works, bronzes, candelabras, table- tops, etc. besides a rich collection of the best mosaics and shell engravings.”
