The sculptures of the Amsterdam artist Boris Paval Conen, mainly made of wood, show 'moments'. A moment or a scene. You see that something has taken place that will certainly have a sequel.
The artist, who is also a sculptor and filmmaker (winner of, among other things, two golden calves), shows moments of tranquility with the images. In addition, the viewer is surprised by elements that 'seem impossible to capture in an image'. However, Boris brings these elements together into a credible spectacle.
The artist may allow the vagaries of the wood, knots and cracks to be present in the image. Together with the design and composition of the image, this forms a story that continues to fascinate.
The artist himself about his work:
“Brief moments of vulnerability frozen in time”.
”Wood is a living material. It is beautiful to see how the cracks appear while the wood dries. I try to predict these cracks. Where and how exactly it ruptures is ultimately something that can only be partially predicted. Of course I could glue blocks together to prevent further cracking of the statue once it is finished. but I love those cracks, the knots and the places where the weathering of the wood can be seen.
The structure of my sculptures is like human skin, cut and marked by a life lived.
