About the Item

Un Christ is a unique smoke-fired stoneware sculpture by French contemporary artist Cécile Raynal, dimensions are 174 × 53 × 35 cm (68.5 × 20.8 × 13.7 in). Dimensions include wooden base (wood table). This sculpture is a unique piece signed by the artist and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Dimensions (excluding plinth): 94 × 53 × 15 cm (approx. 37 × 20.9 × 5.9 in) Weight (without plinth): 10 kg (approx. 22 lbs) The piece is available with either a round or square plinth, both optional. Indicative plinth dimensions: 80 × 35 × 35 cm (approx. 31.5 × 13.8 × 13.8 in). All dimensions are approximate. While the crucifixion is an uncommon theme in Raynal’s work, this piece originated as a private commission. The artist took significant creative liberties with traditional iconography, stating: "I could not nail a man down. Undoubtedly because a man nailed to the cross cannot give an embrace. And it seemed to me this man wanted to embrace humans." The sculpture was exhibited at Rêves(s) de filles at the Maurice Denis Museum in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, and later photographed during Raynal’s solo exhibition À la table des Dames (At the Ladies’ Table) at Montivilliers Abbey in Normandy (2025). Whether portraying humans or animals, Cécile Raynal’s sculptures serve as a way of exploring the world. Her creative process involves traveling to remote, forgotten, or marginalized places, where she gathers life stories and immortalizes them in clay. Her work has been featured in esteemed institutions such as the Musée des Arts et Métiers (Paris, 2018), and she has received major public commissions, including a bronze sculpture of Winston Churchill in Cap-d’Ail, France.
