These commanding bronze figures are perfect for making a statement in a grand foyer, private garden, or corporate lobby. Unlike traditional smooth bronzes, these feature Chen's distinctive rugged, angular texture, reflecting light in a dynamic, modern way. They bring a sense of "grounding protection" and Zen stability to high-end contemporary spaces.
At temple gates, Vajra Guardians (or Nio) stand as protectors of the Dharma. In this powerful pair, sculptor Cheng-Hsiung Chen reimagines them not as fearsome deities, but as sources of safety and compassion.
Carved with bold, angular strokes that mimic the strength of hewn rock, the figures possess muscles that appear immovable. Instead of weapons, they communicate through symbolic mudras:
The "A" (Open Mouth): One figure raises five fingers, representing the Five Elements (earth, water, fire, wind, space) and the beginning of all phenomena.
The "Hum" (Closed Mouth): The other shows three fingers, symbolizing the Three Jewels of Buddhism and the unity of completion.
Chen transforms these traditional icons into approachable guardians whose strength radiates warmth. This specific pair is considered one of the artist's signature masterpieces and was selected as the cover image for his major exhibition catalog.
