About the Item

A classical marble sculpture depicting three nymphs arranged in a circle in a dancing pose, sculpted and signed Cipriani. The graces are positioned in a circle and jointly hold a crown of flowers and garlands, and their flowing robes create an elegant drapery that envelops and depicts the grace and elegance of their bodies. A similar bronze work is found with a neoclassical table in the Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte (no. 3328) and according to Alvar Gonzalez Palacios was "probably derived from a print in Saint-Non's book, Voyage Pittoresque, 1763, pl. 235, which depicts a marble then in the collection of the Bailli de Breteuil" (see catalogue “The Age of Neoclassicism”, London 1972, no. 1667). The marble was perhaps the one now in the Louvre (see S. Reinach, pl. 323). Several models similar to the present group were executed between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and were inspired by Saint Non's “Voyage Pittoresque”.
