This contemporary outdoor sculpture of a pine cone made from steel is by Floyd Elzinga.
Hand forged from corten steel, Floyd Elzinga’s impressive outdoor sculpture of a pine cone is designed to house logs for a fire. The stem of the pine cone opens like a lid and allows for logs to be stacked inside a metal mesh basket.
Elizinga’s dynamic sculptures reflect the rugged natural landscape that surrounds his studio on the Niagara escarpment. He is best known for re-creating iconic Canadian images—the pinecone, the maple leaf and the pine branch using industrial materials. His pieces are both playful—pop art and inspiring. The pine cone stands upright, balancing on one end.

Floyd Elzinga received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art
Design in Halifax, NS. Elzinga has been an artist in residence in both India and Vietnam. At the foot of Everest, he had the unique experience of creating art from collected waste, and in Hanoi, he attended a symposium that attracted sculptors from all over the world to contribute to South East Asia’s largest sculpture park. Floyd Elzinga’s pinecone sculptures have been featured as part of Toronto’s Scotiabank Nuit Blanche celebration of contemporary art, and his work is held in collections across Ontario and in the US. He lives and works in Niagara, Ontario.

Floyd Elzinga
Canadian sculptor Floyd Elzinga’s work merges iconic imagery from the Canadian landscape – the maple leaf, pine branch and pine cone – with Pop art to create works that are both playful and inspiring. From his studio on the Niagara Escarpment, Elzinga creates unique indoor and outdoor steel and bronze sculptures that resonate with a distinctly Canadian perspective. Elzinga has exhibited across Ontario and in Alberta and Nova Scotia. His work has been commissioned for public and private spaces in Canada, the US and internationally. A branch and leaf that bends in the wind was commissioned by Global Affairs Canada for the APEC Park in Da Nang, Vietnam. His corten and stainless steel sculptures can be found in the City of Lacombe, Alberta, Kings Christian Collegiate in Oakville, Loretto College, Toronto, The Groves Welcome Center in Humble, TX, the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Toronto to name just a few. Elzinga holds a degree in Earth Sciences from McMaster University, a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and a Certificate of Art Fundamentals from Sheridan College of Applied Arts
