About the Item

One of a Kind and very delicate crucified Christ, following the renowned model created by the Italian Mannerist sculptor Guglielmo della Porta (1515-1577). The body is carved from boxwood, and the cross from ebony, all resting on a rocky base with a skull at the foot of the cross. Three nails adorn the cross. This prototype of Christ was created by della Porta for Cardinal Alessandro Farnese in 1571, and from then on, it spread rapidly in various materials. There are even variations attributed to Giambologna and his workshop. In Spain, we find examples from the late 16th and early 17th centuries, with the slight difference that the loincloth (perizonium) is very small, which deviates from the spirit of the Council of Trent, which censured nudity in sacred images. However, it does place it within the period of the Catholic Counter-Reformation due to a small detail, unusual in this type of carving: a hole on the left side of the chest covered with a small, square piece of wood, which seems intended to transform the image into a reliquary. It is currently closed. This prototype is characterized by its delicate, Michelangelo-inspired anatomy, with meticulous anatomical study. It features a slender silhouette, prominent ribs, long thighs, and a tilted head with curly hair and beard. The model was very popular, disseminated through copies and workshop versions, even inspiring artists of the stature of Bernini and El Greco. This is a truly museum piece!! Crucified Christ, Sorrowful Crucifix. Carved and polychrome wood.
Located in Madrid, ES
Crucified Christ, Sorrowful Crucifix. Carved and polychrome wood. Possibly southern German school, 15th century. Polychrome and gilded wood carving showing Christ with the Crown of Thorns, on the Cross, already deceased (eyes closed), with the usual INRI phylactery on the upper crossbar of the Latin cross, three nails (note the crossed feet) and a short, golden and polychrome purity cloth or perizonium. It is known, in German, as “Gabelkreuz” or “Gabelkruzifix” (“Sorrowful Crucifix” in Spanish) to a type of Gothic Crucified Christ that is especially expressive (prioritizing external suffering over other aspects) and that, normally, presents the cross in a of Y or ypsilon (alluding to the Tree of Life), created, apparently, thanks to the influence of the mysticism of the late 13th and early 14th centuries (Saint Brigid...
