About the Item

A deeply spiritual and visually symbolic wooden sculpture by revered folk artist and preacher Rev. Howard Finster (1916–2001), dated 1991 and numbered 21,000,267. This hand-painted cut-out figure stands on a wooden base and depicts a female religious figure—possibly a nun or saint—rendered in bright yellow, with a pink face and a flowing robe that merges seamlessly with her head covering. Her hands are tucked into her sleeves, cradling a scroll or banner that reads “Faith”. Her robe is adorned with delicate linear patterns and small painted angel figures, a rare decorative detail in Finster’s work. The base features his signature handwritten religious text, and the artist’s signature appears at the figure’s feet. The back includes a drawn bird—possibly symbolic—and several of Finster’s iconic tiny “art faces.” Details: Artist: Rev. Howard Finster Title: Faith (Untitled religious figure) Date: 1991 Work Number: 21,000,267 Medium: Hand-painted wood cut-out on wooden base Color Palette: Yellow, pink, white, and black Signature: Signed by the artist at base Dimensions: [Let me know if you’d like to add these] Condition: Structurally sound but with a loose fastening where the figure connects to the base. The cut-out leans to one side but does not detach. Surface paint and writing are well preserved. Wear consistent with age. This is a graceful and highly symbolic work from Finster’s prolific early ’90s period, combining religious devotion, folk tradition, and his hallmark visual motifs.
